Creating a Text Message Campaign

Step-by-step guide to creating an SMS/MMS campaign in the new Campaigns.

⚠️ This article covers the new Campaigns (V2), released August 2026. If you're still on Legacy Campaigns (V1), which will be retired in January 2027, see Creating a Text Message Campaign (Legacy Campaigns) instead.

Campaigns V2 builds and sends a campaign from a single screen, and works off tags instead of manually selecting contacts.

1. Start a new campaign

Select Campaigns from the left navigation, then click New. Choose a campaign type: SMS | MMS or RVM. If your account has Email or RCS enabled, those will also appear as options here — contact support if you'd like them enabled. Click Create.

A name is generated automatically; click into the field to rename it. This name is for your own internal reference (reports, finding the campaign later) — it isn't seen by recipients. Anything you change in a campaign saves automatically when you click away from the field.

2. From — the number recipients see

Select the phone number you want to send from. If your account has only one number, it's selected automatically.

3. To — who receives this

Choose your Audience: either Specific contacts or All active contacts. With Specific contacts, you can filter by when a contact was created (on, before, after, or between dates), and build your list under Include by adding Tags (think of a tag as a list — the more you add, the more contacts come in) and/or individual Contacts.

As you build your audience, a live count shows your current matches, including how many on your list have opted out (those are automatically excluded from sending).

Need to leave certain people out? Use Add Exclusions to skip contacts by tag or by name — this replaces the Legacy "remove contacts before it sends" step. A couple of examples: texting all your 2025 donors but excluding 2026 supporters you're trying to reactivate, or inviting people to an event but excluding those who already registered.

4. Message

Write your message in the compose box. Add opt-out instructions (TCPA) is checked by default and adds "Reply STOP to unsubscribe" to your character count.

Below the compose box you'll find:

  • Templates — choose from over 150 provided templates, or save and reuse your own

  • Personalize — insert merge fields like {{first_name}} (shown as a placeholder; the actual value varies per recipient)

  • Tracked Link — choose a link you've already created or create a new one. Use one of Rally's short link services or your own custom domain. Each recipient gets a unique version of the link so clicks can be tracked back to them. (Same feature as Legacy's chain-link button, just relabeled.)

  • AI rewrite (if enabled on your account) — helps rewrite your message based on examples of messages that have historically converted well

  • Attach images, video, a RallyCorp widget (a clickable video or short link), or an emoji

A live character and SMS credit counter shows in the corner of the compose box as you type, so you can see exactly what a longer message or a tracked link will cost before you send.

Use Test (top right of the Message section) to send yourself a test before launching.

5. Delivery — when it sends

Choose how the campaign goes out:

  • Send Now — sends immediately

  • Send Later — schedule a specific date and time

  • Peer To Peer (available on the Growth plan) — queues your list and releases one message at a time for more personalized, manual sending

6. Save or launch

Click Save draft to come back to it later, or Launch. Launching shows a preview of the message as recipients will see it on their phone, your recipient count, and your estimated credit cost, before anything sends.

Once launched, you'll see a live status as it sends, including how many messages were received and any bounces (click Recipients for the full bounce report). Under Reports, you can click into any number to see the contacts behind it, then select contacts to add or remove tags, opt them out, or export them.

Cloning a campaign

Open a past campaign and select Clone to create an exact duplicate — message, links, templates, and all other settings included. Add new contacts, and it's ready to go.
