Updated over 3 weeks ago

Introduction

Using a dedicated SMS short code can help Rally Corp clients build brand recognition, enhance trust, and increase message throughput for high-volume campaigns. This document outlines the costs associated with obtaining a short code and the steps involved in the application process.

1. Costs Associated with a Dedicated SMS Short Code

Leasing Fees

  • Rally Corp clients have two main options for short codes:

  • Random Short Code: A randomly assigned 5- or 6-digit code. Costs typically range from $500 to $1,500 per month.

  • Vanity Short Code: A custom-selected code that may be easier to remember, typically costing $1,000 to $1,750 per month.

  • Note: Depending on your volume, every SMS/MMS provider pays the same rates to carriers and registration services. Therefore, Rally Corp will not be beaten on carrier fees/pricing if we compare “apples to apples.” Just make sure you read the “other guys” small print. They love Small Print!

Setup and Application Fees

There is often a one-time setup fee associated with securing a short code:

One-Time Setup Fee: This fee usually ranges from $500 to $2,500, depending on the service provider and application complexity.

Carrier Connectivity Costs

While some providers include carrier connectivity in their leasing fees, others may charge an additional fee ranging from $500 to $1,500 per month.

Messaging Fees

The costs for sending and receiving messages on a dedicated short code are volume-based and vary by service provider. Rally Corp can provide detailed cost breakdowns based on your estimated message volume.

2. Steps to Obtain a Dedicated Short Code

Step 1: Determine Your Short Code Type

Decide whether you need a random or vanity short code based on your budget and branding needs.

Step 2: Select a Service Provider

Choose an SMS service provider or aggregator, such as Rally Corp that has experience with short code provisioning to assist with the application process. Our team has access to several providers and can negotiate the best sending ranges on your behalf.

Step 3: Submit an Application

  • The application process requires a detailed outline of how the short code will be used, including:

  • Campaign purpose

  • Opt-in methods

  • Compliance with regulations

  • The wireless carriers review each application to ensure it aligns with industry standards for customer protection. Rally Corp will provide all forms and guidance through the process.

Step 4: Await Approval

After submission, the approval process may take 6 to 12 weeks as each carrier reviews the application independently. Rally Corp can assist with the application and manage the process on your behalf to ensure efficiency. As a note, you will be required to pay for the short code during this time, so expect to pay around 30% before you can use the short code.

Step 5: Provisioning and Testing

Once approved, the short code is provisioned, and testing is conducted to ensure it functions correctly across all carriers. This step ensures that the short code delivers consistent and reliable performance for your campaigns. Rally Corp will connect the short code to your Rally platform account (it will show as a “platform number”)

Step 6: Launch Your Campaign

Upon successful testing, you can launch your messaging campaigns using the dedicated short code, with Rally Corp’s support to ensure compliance and optimal results.

Additional Notes

The application process is thorough and designed to protect consumers from unsolicited messages.

Rally Corp’s experience and industry knowledge help streamline this process, allowing clients to focus on building meaningful connections with their audiences.

FAQs

1. Can a short code send text messages?

Yes. A short code is specifically designed for sending and receiving SMS and MMS messages. It allows organizations to reach a large number of people quickly, making it ideal for high-volume messaging campaigns. With the Rally platform, you can set up unlimited keywords to trigger custom actions (workflows), with the only reserved keywords being “STOP, START, JOIN, and HELP.”

2. Can recipients reply to texts sent from a short code?

Yes, with Rally Corp, recipients can reply to messages sent from a short code. This two-way messaging capability enables real-time interaction, allowing organizations to engage in conversations, answer questions, and collect feedback from recipients. You can also move the conversation to a regular number (local or toll-free) if you choose.

3. Can I make or receive a phone call with a short code?

No, short codes are designed solely for SMS and MMS text messaging. They cannot be used to make or receive voice calls. A separate phone number is required for voice-enabled messaging solutions. Rally Corp provides both toll-free and local (10DLC) numbers for this purpose.

4. What is the difference between a random and a vanity short code?

A random short code is a 5- or 6-digit number assigned at random by the provider, whereas a vanity short code is a custom, easy-to-remember number selected by the organization, such as "24365." Vanity short codes are often more expensive but can enhance brand recognition. With Rally Corp, our customers have access to keywords on our vanity short code 24365 (e.g., Text GIVE to 24365)

5. How long does it take to get a short code approved?

The approval process for a short code typically takes 6 to 12 weeks. Each carrier reviews the application to ensure compliance with regulations. Rally Corp assists with the application process to ensure a smooth and timely approval. In most cases, you must pay for the short code while the application is under review.
