Sending videos via MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) can be tricky due to carrier file size limits. Most carriers cap MMS file sizes between 500KB and 1.7MB, with toll-free numbers typically limited to 525KB. To ensure your video is delivered reliably across all carriers, we recommend keeping it under 0.6MB.
This guide walks you through how to compress your video using HandBrake, a free and easy-to-use tool for Mac and Windows.
Step-by-Step: Compressing Videos in HandBrake for MMS
1. Download and Open HandBrake
Visit https://handbrake.fr/ and install the app. Once installed, open HandBrake and import your video file.
2. Choose Output Settings
In the main window:
Format: Select MP4
Video Codec: Set to H.264 (x264)
Framerate (FPS): Set to 15 fps and check Constant Framerate
Quality: Use Avg Bitrate (kbps) and set it to 50 kbps
3. Resize the Video
Under the Dimensions tab:
Width: Set to 320
Height: Leave blank or let it auto-adjust
Make sure cropping is set to Custom: 0, 0, 0, 0
4. Audio Settings (Optional)
Under the Audio tab:
Codec: AAC
Bitrate: 32 kbps (you can remove audio entirely if it's not needed)
5. Save and Export
Choose a file name and save location, then click Start Encode.
After export, check the file size. If it's still over 600KB, shorten the video duration or reduce bitrate further (try 40 kbps).
